Nikkei Business magazine caused a stir back in September 1983 when it argued that even outstanding companies can enjoy their leading status for no more than 30 years. Disclosure of Exec Pay Becoming Bigger Investor Issue
Executive compensation is drawing increasing attention in Japan from the perspective of corporate disclosure to shareholders. Companies began including executive compensation in their financial statements for the fiscal year through March 2004 after a Cabinet Office ordinance on the disclosure of corporate information was revised on March 31, 2003.

More Firms Adopting Western Governance Systems
Of approximately 2,700 listed companies that close their books in March, 1,006 adopted outside directors. It was the first time for the number to top 1,000 and represents an increase of 70% from three years earlier. In addition, 1,179 companies during the same period introduced a corporate officer system aimed at separating day-to-day operational decision-making from top management, also marking a 70% increase. The findings show that Japanese companies are trying to reinforce their governance by introducing U.S.- and British-style corporate structures.
